What Fabricology Essentials IS:
Fabricology Essentials is a foundational course that teaches you how fiber, yarn, weave, finish, weight, and stretch work together to create fabric.
It gives you a practical framework for decoding online fabric descriptions, so you can make informed buying decisions with confidence.
This course is designed for garment sewists who:
-
Feel nervous buying fabric online because they can’t touch it
-
Have been surprised or disappointed by what arrived in the mail
-
Want to stop guessing and start understanding how fabric will behave when sewn and worn
What Fabricology Essentials is NOT:
It is not a giant encyclopedia of every fabric type on earth.
It is not a 30-hour, ultra-technical textile science course.
And it does not attempt to catalog every variation of every fabric (for example: crepe, crepe de chine, crepe backed satin).
Instead, you’ll learn a repeatable way of thinking about fabric — one you can apply to any fabric description you see online.
This sounds like exactly what I've been looking for

What’s Inside
Fabricology Essentials?
Module 1 — Fiber Foundations
Why fabric behaves the way it does starts here.
You’ll learn the differences between natural fibers, man-made fibers, and regenerated cellulose— and how each affects drape, softness, breathability, longevity, and care.
Why this matters: Once you understand fiber, you can predict a lot about how a fabric will feel and wear just from the description.
Module 2 — Yarns: The Hidden Influence
Small details. Big impact.
Yarn type and twist influence drape, stretch, softness, structure, sheen, and sewing ease — even when the fiber is the same.
Why this matters: Many “mystery” results in finished garments come from yarn, not fiber. Knowing this helps you read between the lines of online descriptions.
Module 3 — Weave: The Structure Behind Every Fabric
The blueprint of your fabric.
You’ll learn how weave construction affects movement, stability, wrinkle resistance, sheen, and garment suitability.
Why this matters: When you understand weave, you can look at a fabric description and know whether it will hang softly, hold structure, or fall somewhere in between.
Module 4 — Color, Pattern & Finishes
What you see isn't always what you get.
You’ll learn how dye methods, printing techniques, and finishes affect fabric before and after washing.
Why this matters: You’ll be able to look past pretty photos and understand what’s likely to happen after sewing, washing, and wearing.
Module 5 — Fabric Weight & Ease of Sewing
Why some fabrics cooperate — and others fight you.
You’ll discover what makes fabric easier to sew, explore beginner-friendly options, and learn how fabric weight impacts drape, comfort, structure, and design choices.
Why this matters: Ease of sewing and fabric weight affect both how a project goes and how the finished garment feels.
Module 6 — Knits, Stretch & Pattern Compatibility
Knits don’t have to be intimidating.
You’ll learn how knit fabrics are constructed, how stretch percentage and recovery actually work, and how to evaluate different knit types before you buy. You’ll also learn how to assess pattern requirements so you can choose knits that support the fit you want.
Why this matters: Matching fabric stretch to pattern ease lets you control how a knit garment fits — instead of leaving it to chance.
Module 7 — Shopping for Fabric Online
This is where everything comes together.
Using what you learned in Modules 1–6, you’ll walk step-by-step through real fabric shopping examples and learn exactly how to:
-
Evaluate patterns
-
Interpret fabric descriptions
-
Choose fabrics that behave the way you expect
Why this matters: This module turns knowledge into a repeatable process you can use every time you shop for fabric online.

A quick note from me...
I created Fabricology Essentials because I struggled with fabric choices too — until I finally learned how fabric really works.
I was lucky enough to take a textile science course in college, complete with a fabric lab, and it changed everything for me. Understanding how fiber, yarn, weave, and finish work together removed so much guesswork and replaced it with confidence.
Most sewists never get access to that level of clarity. And now, with fabric stores disappearing, understanding fabric is more important than ever.
My goal with this course is simple:
I want you to feel confident, empowered, and excited when you shop for fabric online — not stressed or unsure.
It is possible to know how a fabric will feel, how it will drape, and how it will behave without touching it. When you understand fabric, an entirely new world of creative possibility opens up.
I can't wait to share that with you.
All my best,
Toni
